Self Injury Through Time Devised Theatre Group - for people of all genders over 18

In partnership with acta Community Theatre and University of Reading.

In January 2024, ACTA, Self Injury Support and Alanna Skuse are starting a group to explore the history and raise awareness of self-harm. We will be using the first couple of months to get a feel for the group, what we’d like to explore more and get to know each other.

We will be sharing ideas and learning about the history of self-harm and how it has evolved/what has stayed the same. We will then use the weekly sessions over the next 4 months to create a performance—completely written and devised by the group. There are chances to act, write, research and a safe space to be creative and have your voice heard. We’re looking for this to be a group that can have different experiences of self-harm.

This will be a space to explore what self-harm means to you, maybe thinking about what sort reactions you’ve had from other people or thoughts you’ve had yourself and how we can look into the past to see if it may be comforting or help us give a new light to mental health and self-harm. Working as a team, we’ll produce and perform a piece of theatre to convey the months of exploration and preparation to the audience.

There are a limited number of places and they will be given on a first come, first served basis so please do get in touch on [email protected]

We will be running this group as weekly 1hr 30min sessions every Tuesday at 2.45pm-4.15pm. We start in January 2024 and run through to early July 2024 when we will be performing 2 shows at the Acta Community Theatre in Bedminster.

Performance dates: 15th and 16th July 2024

An unexpected group of strangers come together one evening; to discuss the one thing they all have in common.

Through sharing their own experiences and hearing each other’s, they begin to question the perception they’ve always held about self-injury and ask themselves “Am I Worthy?”

On the 15th and 16th July 2024, join the participants of Self-injury Through Time for an evening of visual art, theatre and spoken word, exploring how attitudes towards self-injury have changed and what still needs to change to challenge the stigma.

Note: this event will contain references to self-injury and suicide. A break-out space will be provided for those who need a moment. Please feel free to contact us if you’d like any more detail about this.

Exhibition doors open at 6.30pm, Performance to start at 7.15pm.
